Turf Disease Guide

Below are the most common forms of turf disease.  If you recognise any of the symptoms below in your turf, visit the RHS website for further help on how best to treat the problem.

Leatherjackets

 
  • Also known as daddy long legs or crane flies

  • Affects mainly lawn grasses but also seedlings and small plants

  • Symptoms - yellowish brown dead patches on lawn caused by the larvae

  • more numerous after a wet autumn, as damp conditions favour survival of the eggs & young larvae

Fusarium Patch

 
  • Also known as snow mould

  • Affects turf

  • Symptoms - brown patches on lawns, particularly in autumn or during mild spells in winter

  • Caused by fungus

  • Very noticeable after thaws of snow, when it is given the common name of snow mould

Red Thread

  • Red Thread is one of the most common fungal patch diseases found on lawns, especially when there is a lack of nitrogen
  • Affects turf

  • Symptoms - patches of affected grass with a reddish tinge at first, later becoming light brown or almost bleached in appearance

  • Appears all year, but more during a wet summer or Autumn

Toadstools

  • a toadstool is the fruiting body of a fungus

  • The classic known image is that of a stalk and a cap

  • They are commonly seen whenever the weather is warm enough

  • In suitable conditions toadstools can be seen in newly laid turf after a few days

  • They emerge is a flush of growth and then disappear when there is a cold snap
